Jewish Languages Project Launched in Katzrin

Ohalo College in Katzrin in the Golan Heights launched a new project aimed at broadening the knowledge of teachers and instructors of Jewish languages and cultures. The ultimate goal is for them to impart this knowledge to their students.

The program, an initiative of the National Authority for Yiddish Culture in cooperation with the National Authority for Ladino Culture, focuses on Yiddish, Ladino and Jewish-Arabic.

As part of the section dedicated to Yiddish language and culture, Dr. Mordechay Yushkovsky gave a lecture to students, teachers and parents of students, who travelled from far away to attend. Although the subject was new to most of them, Dr. Yushkovsky's words were warmly received.

Students also took part in a course on Yiddish texts with an emphasis on the influence of local culture. The course will include a workshop on "Piyutim," Jewish liturgical poems, in all three languages.

This program is another step in the Authority’s efforts to introduce Yiddish culture into the Israeli educational system.

Dr. Tehila Bubilski is the program coordinator.
