The Yiddish singer Nechama Lifshitz passed away

The nightingale of Soviet Jewry is no more. Nechama Lifshitz, who traveled the length and breadth of the Soviet Union singing in Yiddish and Hebrew, died on April 21, 2017 at age 89.

Lifshitz, who was born in Kovno (Kaunas), Lithuania, in October 1927, reminded the people once known as the Jews of Silence that silent or otherwise they were Jews who carried the responsibility of passing on whatever remained of their heritage to future generations.

Nechama Lifshitz made the aliyah in 1969/ In Israel she continued performing and directed a musical library. Since 1997 she ran the Yiddish song studio in Tel Aviv, which is sponsored by the National Authority for Yiddish Culture.
